Mountain Biking
If you fancy some demanding riding well off the beaten track in wild, remote countryside away from all the crowds at the popular spots then take on the challenge that is the Epynt Way. This is a 65Km route around the circumference of the Sennybridge Training Area. From the upland moors of the Epynt at around 400 m you will get stunning, uninterrupted views of the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains, Carmarthen Fans and Cambrian Mountains.
The terrain is varied. The southern half of the route is VERY DEMANDING, cross-country on open, tussocky grass moorland with multiple steep sided valleys. Care should be taken on this part of the route as the ground is wet, muddy and slippy most of the year. The eastern and western ends of the route and most of the northern side of the Epynt is on forest tracks and a section of minor public road. Care should be taken and riders should be on the lookout for military vehicles on the tracks plus horse riders and walkers. The northern side provides links from the path to miles of forest tracks to explore within Crychan Forest and other Public Rights of Way. You can combine hard cross-country riding with quiet country lanes to provide great circular routes on and off the formal waymarked Epynt Way path.
The number of routes is only limited by your imagination.
You might see and hear soldiers training but more likely you will be away from it all with only wildlife such as Red Kites, Buzzards and hares for company. Please ride responsibly. Always wear a helmet and other appropriate safety equipment and be aware that on much of the route mobile device reception is patchy. Please don’t stray from the marked path or pick up items of military debris for safety reasons. Given this is mainly upland moorland check the weather forecast and pack appropriate gear. You can download maps of the route from this site.
The Epynt Way Visitor Centre between Garth and Upper Chapel provides free parking and toilets and makes for a good start point but there are plenty of other places to gain access to the route. Please note overnight camping is not permitted anywhere on Sennybridge Training Area.
Come and enjoy a spectacular challenge that will be a major workout for you and your bike.
