Riding

The Epynt Way provides 65 km of riding with links to bridleways off the Mynydd Epynt and multiple rides on tracks in Crychan Forest.

It crosses a variety of terrain from open moorland, steep valleys and forest tracks giving stunning views to the south to the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains to the east, west to Mynydd Du and the Cambrian Mountains to the north. The route is waymarked with yellow topped posts. Despite this please take a map with you. Maps for each section of the route can be downloaded from this site.

If you box up to come and ride on the Epynt Way there are 5 Receptors around the route (see map). These corrals allow you to park then unload and tack up within a secure enclosure.

The corrals are located at the Garth Viewpoint (grid ref SN 964 466) (what3words: ///geese.reporting.thumps),

Tirabad (grid ref SN 872 411) (what3words: ///comedians.adjusting.ties),

Fedw (grid ref SN 860 324) (what3words: ///crusaders.groomed.chart),

Llandeilo'r Fan (grid ref SN 895 351) (what3words: ///invite.treetop.rooms) and

Llwyn-y-celyn (grid ref SN 965 384) (what3words: ///valued.barn.totals).

Each has a display map of the entire route.  At 2 points, (one on the north side and one at the eastern end of the route) for rider safety, the riding route diverts from the walking route. These diversions are signed with a horseshoe symbol on waymarker posts and will bring you back to the main route once the hazard has been by-passed.

The going along the route is varied.  Tracks are useable all year round. Open moorland can be boggy from October to May and in some places, all year round. On the south side of the route the valleys are steep and riders should be prepared to dismount and lead in places. Long handled gates are provided along most of the route to save dismounting. Some access points, however, are currently fitted with standard gates.  There are bridges over the rivers and streams but most can be forded if your horse is unused to narrow bridges.

Military training takes place throughout the year so be prepared for sudden loud noise and occasional low flying helicopters.  Always wear safety equipment when riding and we advise wearing a hi visibility vest or jacket. Be aware that the mobile phone signal is variable on the Epynt so always let someone know your plans.

Riding on the Epynt Way is a wonderful experience with breath taking views in stunning scenery whether you are out for a 2 hour hack or a multi-day trek.
